L.S. Lowry (1887-1976)

Today i will blog about my favourate artist during the 18th to 19th century which is L.S. Lowry (1887-1976).

One of the best-known artistic figures in contemporary British painting, the Manchester artist L.S. (Laurence Stephen) Lowry was born and spent all his life in Northern England . Lowry's signature idiom is genre-painting or urban landscape, especially pictures of 'matchstick' figures drawn against industrial buildings, often emphasizes hazy atmosphere.

L.S. Lowry was born in Stretford, Lancashire in 1887. His mother was disappointed by the birth of her son as she prefers to give birth to a girl. His father, was a 'cold fish', the sort of man who 'realised he had a life to live and did his best to get through it. Lowry showed an early talent for art. At the age of 18,  he secured a place at the Manchester School of Art, where he came under the influence of his teacher the French Impressionist Adolphe Valette. Later, in 1925, Lowry studied for a period at the Salford School of Art where his studies continued until 1925 and he developed an interest in industrial landscapes and began to establish his style.
There’s a huge differences between my life experiences compared with L.S. Lowry. He mentioned that he never had any woman in his life but he had few close friends. For my opinion, I felt that having a partner in life is very important. Next, His passion for painting never sleeps. Even though he work as a clerk in the morning before his retirement but he will paint at night. He created almost 15,000 sketches and oil paintings during his lifetime. For me, I don’t think I am that hardworking compared to L.S Lowry to work and paint at the same time as it is tiring.

I have learnt some life lessons when i do research about L.S Lowry. I learnt that practice makes perfect. I believed L.S Lowry is known for his art work because his hard work is paid off by doing a lot of attempts and attended art schools. Besides, we can’t choose our parents but live with it. L.S Lowry agreed in an interview that he had unpleasant childhood. He remained tough in his family and never had an impulsive decision by running away from home but pursue his dreams in arts. Moreover, be humble even though you are famous. For instance, he supported young artist such as Sheila Fell by buying their pictures and gave to the museums.

The picture showed above is the art work i did for my drawing fundamental class inspired by L.S Lowry. I like the way the he drew building with hazy atmosphere . By doing the artwork above, I conclude that i am really weak at perspective and now i know my weakness so i can improve it .
